The Oxford English dictionary defines fashion as a popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior. Where as Merriam-Webster says fashion is both a popular way of dressing during a particular time or among a particular group of people and the business of creating and selling clothes in new styles. What do I say? Fashion is a form of self expression that allows a person to be the most confident and most beautiful form of oneself. Yes, parts of the fashion industry are composed of designers, labels and price-tags. After all, it is a business. But really, when it comes down to it, fashion is everywhere and anywhere, any neighborhood, any town, and involves a diverse group of people. Coco Chanel said it best when she stated that “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” I could not have said it better myself. Fashion has and always will be a huge part of my life. It is NOT and I will NEVER say that fashion is just about the clothes. Fashion is not defined by how wealthy you or your parents are, or even by what brand you are wearing. Fashion is an opportunity for everyone to self express. One person’s sense of fashion could be sweatpants and T-shirts, another could be classic cuts and preppy pants, or even just the color pink. It doesn’t matter what your style is, the important part is that it is YOUR style. No judgement, no stereotyping, everyone is different and everyone is beautiful in their own way. That is the beauty of fashion. The FREEDOM it gives EACH and EVERY person to be the truest, most confident, and most beautiful form of his or herself.
